Oral Tie Clinic

Releasing a tongue or lip tie is about more than surgical technique.

If feeding is difficult, we need to understand why – and explore all contributing factors before jumping to a procedure.

That’s why I provide comprehensive oral tie care, grounded by my training in breastfeeding medicine, oral function and infant development.

My service provides: a thorough assessment of you and your Baby; discussion about relevant feeding issues; gentle treatment, only when indicated; as well as support beyond the procedure – often in collaboration with your own Lactation Consultant or with our Mum and Baby Clinic LC, Shona Cassels

Feed your baby as normal before your visit – no fasting needed.

We'll discuss what's been challenging and your health histories, then assess feeding, your breasts (if breastfeeding) and Baby from top to little toes.

I'll explain my thoughts and whether I think an oral tie division would be helpful.

If a tie release is recommended, we can do it then and there, or plan for another time.

If  don't think it will help - I'll tell you! - and support you with strategies for the other causes of feeding challenges.

This takes just a couple of minutes and is designed to be as gentle and natural as possible.

You’re welcome to stay with your Baby.

I wrap them snugly with their wrap, for comfort and scent.

My nurse supports your Baby while I gently position their mouth.

Then I release the tie carefully, with sterile surgical scissors.

For pain relief, I use a few drops of sucrose – or your expressed breast milk if you prefer to avoid anything artificial.

Your little one returns straight to your arms for a feed.

We’ll reassess feeding and I’ll provide further guidance.

Some babies improve immediately, others take time to adjust to their new function, and in some cases, feeding doesn't change – this is part of why proper assessment matters.

No painful wound stretches or oral exercises are needed – just frequent, responsive feeding.

It’s totally normal to feel nervous – you’re not alone!

The most common risk is minor bleeding - usually just a spot or two.

Other possible risks include:

No improvement in feeding issues (which is why a comprehensive assessment and ongoing support matters)

Reattachment (rare with proper follow-up and regular feeding)

Very rare: infection, scarring, oral aversion

We’ll go over all risks and how we minimise them at your appointment.

Because I’m experienced. I’m a GP Mum with advanced skills in breastfeeding medicine and child health. I also work in the Tongue Tie Clinic at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

I take the time to look at the whole picture – I look at a Mum and her Baby and I assess the whole Baby, not just their mouth.

Follow up care is available and encouraged – this might be with me for other issues, your Lactation Consultant or our Mum and Baby Clinic’s Lactation Consultant Shona Cassels.

My technique avoids unnecessary discomfort – a precise procedure, no fasting, no wound stretches or oral exercises and no need for ongoing medication.

You’ll leave with a plan in place and a coordinated team to support you.
